Try your voice type

The choir comprises 4 main voices, Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass although, for certain pieces of music, we may split each voice further into 1st and 2nd voices e.g. Soprano 1 and Soprano 2.

If don’t know which voice you would be comfortable singing and you want to try the voices out for yourself you can play the samples below. These are the commonly considered theoretical range of each voice but don’t worry if you can’t reach the notes at either end because we very rarely sing anything which requires any voice to hit these extremes. Try these out and find where you are most comfortable then have a go at the voice samples below for Mozart’s Ave verum corpus. Play the full choir version first then experiment with the individual voices.

Click on the light coloured arrow to the left of each dark bar to start the music sample.

If you still have difficulty fitting your voice in – don’t worry the voices overlap in actual practice and you will always get friendly and helpful advice from the members of the choir.  Have another try on our Online Rehearsal Resources page.
